I’ve read it several times since and let it seep into me... For me, this is not science fiction at all, but rather a book that is a vision of the future—a book that is slowly taking shape and coming true before our very eyes... All that remains is to long for the 90s and the 2000s, when surfers from all over the world flirted with the vision of the global village, and the internet that was born was relatively truly free—a wild west of possibilities. Today, in practice, nothing of that remains. Governments and tech corporations have burned the global village for profit and control over consciousness... Today, if you want privacy and access to a "free internet," you have to go underground—almost into the basement—where criminals, drug dealers, and various kinds of dissidents reside... The point is that there is no longer any innocence or magic in this whole “online” thing. And yet, offline life has become so boring and gray that, like moths, we are drawn to the flame... There are two options, or faces, to the internet: 1. The commercial, sanitized internet of Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon—under increasing government supervision—where mainly “divide and rule” takes place, along with civil war between right and left on social networks. 2. Underground networks and alternative protocols that do not surface until the depths of the iceberg—the “darknet”—where there is no turning back, just as there was no turning back for Winston Smith in "1984" from the moment he committed “thoughtcrime,” punishable by death. This is how it is in a world and a country sinking deeper and deeper into a fascist, totalitarian reality, where human rights, liberalism, and pluralism are considered “thoughtcrime,” and where authorities work to suppress freedom of expression more and more. It will always be in the name of some lofty value such as “protecting the children” or “patriotism,” or some other pathetic excuse. Let it be clear: those in the upper echelons of power and the economic elite are the ones who consume all the pedophilia, Nazism, drugs, crime, and corruption they claim to protect us from. The government is above the law because it is the law itself; it is above God because it is God itself. These are the values and beliefs circulating in the rotten upper classes of the economic and ruling elite... People nostalgically long for Windows XP and the old, good Web 2.0. People miss the 90s and the 2000s precisely for what they had and what is missing today... Back then, if you believed in some conspiracy theory or UFOs or some esoteric religion, you could at most set up a small site on GeoCities or open a chat channel on IRC, and whoever wanted could join and consume or read what you were sharing... Whether you were right or left, you had your little corner of the internet—there was space for everyone, even if not everyone agreed... Today, you need multiple accounts across multiple social networks, Telegram/WhatsApp groups, a YouTube channel, a Discord server, one or two forums, and additional IRC channels just to cultivate your “community”... And along the way, to quarrel with and slander those who think differently—all in order to please some algorithm that functions like the “Big Brother” of 1984. Indeed, artificial intelligence is the ultimate “Big Brother.” Wherever you go across the globe, biometric cameras mark your face, where you go, what you do—and track you. Without biometric documents, you cannot leave your home or your country. Dependence on gadgets like smartphones and computers and the internet has become total. In every home, you can find, or must have, these devices that have become the “telescreens” of governments and corporations—tools of control, surveillance, and spying... Google knows everything about you—you are essentially its property, its product. It’s funny how we naively believed in the 90s and 2000s that Google had a rule of “don’t be evil.” Google is the father and mother of evil on the internet. The same can be said about Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook, Apple, and X of Elon Musk— People like to compare the internet to the Matrix from the 1999 film—in which people who do not want to be slaves but free must take the red pill and awaken from the lies fed to them all their lives, and seek a way out of the “Matrix.” In the film, free people are mostly “hackers”—those technology people defined as “criminals” or “terrorists” by conformist society because of their disobedience and rebellion against the system... I also know those who choose to withdraw to an offline life and adopt the vision of “returning to nature” or the anti-technological “Unabomber Manifesto.” They live in some cabin in the wilderness, patiently waiting for the apocalyptic collapse of industrial-technological society... Really so... They choose to live fully in the real world, choosing nature and the wild land—with a wooden cabin, an axe, a knife, and a rifle, living off what they hunt or grow themselves—a kind of return to Neanderthal hunter-gatherer life. In my view, the “Unabomber Manifesto” is nonsense—once you’ve uncorked the technological bottle, there is no going back. But if a nuclear World War III happens or industrial-technological society collapses—good luck to them... And me? What am I? A rebel? A dissident? A hacker? More accurately, I am an outsider addicted to online life, even though I no longer have any illusions about the “internet.” In the 90s, the internet was something small you could browse for a few hours on weekends. Today, it is a global system with governments and corporations with trillions of dollars in interests... Amazing how something that started as a niche hobby or a toy for geeks became something that runs all our lives— The network is about 40 years old and has undergone a lot along the way. Decades of government and corporate intervention, trillions of dollars and resources, have turned it into the monster it is today... The big question is whether this monster will begin to devour people and become a tool of oppression. Already today, every internet user has a universal identification tag and a profile file containing all the information from decades of their internet use on computers and smartphones—what porn they like, their age and gender, their political views, their country and citizenship, their family status, their socioeconomic class, their past, what they discuss online, who their friends and contacts are in email and chats, who they correspond with and about what, which party they vote for, their political opinions, their income and workplace, what they upload online, what music they like, what they watch on YouTube and Instagram, what diseases they suffer from—and thousands more details collected by smart algorithms over years. There are no secrets, no privacy—nothing. The system knows everything about you! The question is how long it will take until someone uses all this against you... The worst thing the internet has done is that young people today lack social skills entirely, and their whole lives are “in the network.” No one really meets and befriends strangers in real life anymore—there are no face-to-face conversations with strangers. People prefer meeting online as a substitute for social interaction. In short, people prefer “virtual reality” over “real reality.” And when you understand this, you realize there is no going back—the 80s and 90s will not return, and the world will not go back to what it was when we grew up... This is the fault line between the 20th and the 21st century... Perhaps one day, maybe yes, maybe no, a totalitarian world regime will arise, or Western countries will become totalitarian, and then the databases will be used to eliminate enemies or political rivals. I can see this happening if Islam rises to power in the West—in Europe and the USA—or maybe I’m wrong, and in about fifty years these databases will be transferred to some huge public archive for historians of the network... One can only hope or dream what will be. As for me, I probably won’t live to know. After my death, there will remain an archive of all my online activity—digital traces of a life that has ended... מה אני? מורד? דיסידנט? האקר? - יותר נכון לומר שאני אאוטסיידר שמכור לחיים אונליין למרות שאין לי כבר שום אשלייה לגבי "האינטרנט" בשנות ה 90 האינטרנט היה משהו קטן שיכולת לגלוש בו לכמה שעות בסופי השבוע היום זאת מערכת חובקת עולם עם אינטרסים של ממשלות ותאגידים של טריליוני דולרים... מדהים כיצד משהו שהתחיל בתוך תחביב נישה או צעצוע של גייקים הפך להיות משהו שמנהל את החיים של כולנו - הרשת חוגגת 40 שנה בערך והיא עברה המון בדרך עשרות שנים של התערבות של ממשלות ותאגידים טריליוני דולרים ומשאבים הפכו אותה למפלצת שהיא כיום... השאלה הגדולה האם המפלצת הזו לא תתחיל לטרוף אנשים ולהפוך לאמצעי דיכוי - כבר כיום לכול משתמש באינטרנט יש תג זיהוי אוניברסלי ותיק פרופיל שם מצוי כול המידע של עשרות שנים של שימוש באינטרנט שלו במחשבים ובטלפונים חכמים - איזה פורנו הוא אוהב מה הגיל והמגדר שלו מה העמדה הפוליטית שלו מאיזה מדינה הוא מה האזרחות שלו מה המצב המשפחתי איזה מעמד סוציו-אקונומי הוא מה העבר שלו על מה הוא משוחח ברשת עם אחרים מי החברים ואנשי הקשר שלו באימייל ובצ'אטים עם מי הוא מתכתב ועל מה לאיזה מפלגה הוא מצביע מהי דעתו הפוליטית בעינייני היום כמה כסף הוא מרוויח ואיפה הוא עובד מה הוא מעלה לאינטרנט ולרשתות חברתיות איזה מוזיקה הוא אוהב מה הוא אוהב לראות ביוטיוב ובאינסטגרם מאיזה מחלות הוא סובל - ועוד אלפי פרטים שאוספים עליו אלוגריתמים חכמים דרך הטלפון החכם שלו והמחשב שלו לאורך שנים - אין סודות אין פרטיות אין שום דבר המערכת יודעת עליך הכול! השאלה היא כמה זמן יחלוף עד שמישהו ישתמש בכול זה כנגדך... הדבר הכי נורא שעשה לנו האינטרנט היא שאנשים צעירים כיום הם חסרי כישורים חברתיים כליל ושכול חייהם נימצאים שם "ברשת" ברשתות חברתיות כיום ברחוב אף אחד איננו באמת "פוגש ומתיידד" עם זרים בחיים האמיתיים ואין "שיחות עם אנשים זרים פנים מול פנים" אנשים מעדיפים להיפגש אונליין כתחליף לאינטרקציות חברתיות בקיצור אנשים מעדיפים "מציאות וירטואלית" על פני "מציאות אמיתית" וכשאתה מבין את זה אתה מבין שאין סיכוי לחזור אחורה - שנות ה 90 וה 80 כבר לא יחזרו והעולם לא יחזור להיות מה שהיה כשגדלנו בו... זה קו השבר בין המאה העשרים והמאה העשרים ואחת... יבוא היום אולי כן ואולי לא שיקום משטר עולמי טוטאליטרי או מדינות במערב יהפכו לטוטאליטריות ואז ישתמשו במאגרים על המשתמשים כדי לחסל אוייבים או יריבים פוליטיים - אני יכול לראות זאת קורה כשהאיסלאם יעלה לשלטון במערב באירוםה ובארה"ב - ויכול להיות שאני טועה ובעוד חמישים שנה לערך יעברו המאגרים לאיזה ארכיון ציבורי ענק של היסטוריונים של הרשת - אפשר רק לקוות או לחלום מה יהיה - באשר אליי אני כבר לא אזכה לדעת זאת כי לא אחיה עד אז כנראה ולאחר מותי יישאר אחריי ארכיון של כול פעילותי ברשת כעקבות דיגיטליים של חיים שהסתיימו להם... סוף.
