In the Jewish community where I live in one of the Western countries, you encounter hatred toward Jews and Israelis everywhere, from immigrants and natives alike. The narrative of “Never Again” and all the historical memory of the lessons of the Holocaust have been completely erased. That’s what happens, they say, when Israel has committed and continues to commit war crimes, ignores international law, and its leaders are wanted in The Hague for crimes against humanity. Those who live in Israel feel this mainly through the internet—harassment and antisemitic, hate-filled remarks in online chat rooms. We Jews in the diaspora feel it more through anti-Israeli and antisemitic graffiti, in pro-Palestinian demonstrations, and in vandalism against Jewish property and the rise in antisemitic crimes. In truth, many Jews here do not see a good future in the diaspora; they are afraid and even consider emigrating to Israel as a last safe haven or a last resort. Many Jewish youths and young people in the community do not see their future here abroad, and many are planning to immigrate to Israel. And there are those who go in the opposite direction and blur their Jewish or Israeli identity, if they can, in the hope of not becoming a target for harassment and antisemitic hatred. The great fear is of a “modern pogrom” against Jews and the Jewish community. Right now, the hatred is directed at Israelis and Israel, but we are not naive—we have seen this movie thousands of times. What begins as legitimate criticism of the policies of the State of Israel ends with terrorist attacks and murders of Jews and Israelis in their homes, with the support of an incited mob and the silence of authorities. That is how it always has been and always will be. Since October 7, it seems that the whole world has united against the Jews and the State of Israel. No one wants a Jewish friend at school, and certainly not an Israeli friend—neither among immigrants nor among natives. There is simply no one to talk to and nothing to talk about. They simply want to erase you completely—as a Jew—and to erase your state from the map. The aspiration of almost everyone is a world without Jews, without Israelis, and without the State of Israel. Meanwhile, among Jews and Israelis there is a withdrawal from the world, much like in the Middle Ages. Jews are returning to live in ghettos, both within diaspora communities and in the State of Israel itself as one large Jewish ghetto in a hostile environment—and how this ends, we all know; one only has to look at history. And I am not even mentioning the boycotts, sanctions, and embargoes on the way. I am not talking about the restrictions, prohibitions, and legal discrimination that will surely come. But all of these are certainly on the way—that’s what happens when the whole world decides you are “not cool.” I remember different days about thirty years ago, at the end of the twentieth century, when being Jewish and Israeli was the coolest thing there was. Interest and curiosity in Judaism and Jewish mysticism were at their peak. But when the whole world is arming to the teeth and preparing for war, and defense budgets are swelling at the expense of welfare, healthcare, and education, and there is a climate crisis, a global economic crisis, and a migration crisis—and the whole world is preparing for some kind of massive war—who cares about the Jews and their state? The world does not want to hear about the “plight of Israelis and Jews.” It prefers to hear the Palestinian narrative and to say: “These Jews whine like victims and commit crimes against humanity—screw them, we’re tired of these whiners, let them go to hell.” Among natives, there is nothing more gratifying than hearing about crimes of the Israeli army and settlers in the territories of Judea and Samaria and about Palestinian victims in the war in Gaza, and to smile and say: “Finally, there’s no need to feel guilty about the Holocaust—maybe Hitler was right.” Among immigrants, it is somewhat different. They see the West in a deep identity crisis and exploit it to impose their agenda and their narrative. From their perspective, they came “to Islamize the West” on the way to a global Islamic caliphate. Those who convert to Islam—excellent. Those who do not—may Allah have mercy on them—they will live according to what Islam permits for Christians and Jews: to live as protected subjects of the caliph in exchange for a poll tax, as second- or third-class citizens. As for Israel and its leadership, which is quite lost, it will become a second Masada until the walls fall again—then, of course, everyone will be slaughtered and the women and children taken as slaves and concubines. The world is moving toward a second Middle Ages—days of darkness, ignorance, and war.
