Without Ranks and Without Flags: 22,000 Children on One Wall in Tel Aviv

22,000 names, zero separation: The installation set to shake the Tel Aviv Peace Conference places Israeli and Palestinian children on a single wall, igniting a charged debate about memory, pain, symmetry—and touching the most exposed nerve of the war

The 2026 People’s Peace Conference will open tomorrow in Tel Aviv, and one of its central installations is already marking itself as a point of friction. The installation, “A child is a child is a child,” is a memorial wall featuring more than 22,000 names of children who have been killed since October 7—Israelis and Palestinians together. According to the data on which the installation is based, this includes about 62 Israeli children alongside more than 22,000 Palestinian children (most of them from the Gaza Strip) who have been killed since October 7. Conference participants will be invited to stop at each name and light a candle.

The names are presented in complete intermixing, with only a first name and age, without any national affiliation or other distinction. On one hand, criticism is expected regarding the very placement of Israeli and Palestinian children’s names together, with claims that it harms Israeli mourning. On the other hand, the opposite criticism is anticipated—that the mixing of names creates a sense of symmetry, at a time when the gaps in the scale and context of loss point to an imbalance between the Israeli and Palestinian sides. The installation expresses precisely this dilemma.

The project, under the artistic direction of Ido Bruno, seeks to examine how death and loss on such a colossal scale can be presented without disappearing into numbers—but also without flattening the unimaginable disparities of reality. According to its creators, the chosen solution does not attempt to resolve or soften the tension, but rather to make it present and bring it into discussion: first names and ages only, without context, in complete intermixing—a clear choice that opposes creating a hierarchy among dead children, and seeks to shift the point of view, and the necessary discussion, to the observer.

The installation, part of the “Compassion Has No Borders” campaign in collaboration with Studio Laba, will be presented במסגרת the 2026 People’s Peace Conference—the largest peace event in Israel this year and the first major gathering of the peace camp since the end of the fighting with Iran and Lebanon, and half a year after the ceasefire in Gaza. The conference, initiated by the “It’s Time” coalition, which includes more than 80 Jewish and Arab organizations focused on reconciliation, peace, and shared society, is expected to host thousands of participants from Israel and around the world—politicians, diplomats, public figures, artists, and peace activists.

As part of the conference, a special panel will also take place with the participation of the installation’s creators, where the dilemma arising from the controversial work will be discussed. Under the title “It is necessary. It is possible. It will happen. Peace.”, the conference will place at the center of public discourse the question of how to move beyond a policy of “eternal war,” and will present a series of action plans, political panels, and civic initiatives—alongside art installations, including works by Broken Fingaz, Adam Yekutieli, Alia Khalil, and Mahmoud Qais.

ועידת השלום העממית 2026 תיפתח בתל אביב מחר: אחד המיצבים המרכזיים בה כבר מסמן את עצמו כנקודת חיכוך. המיצב "ילד הוא ילד הוא ילד" הוא קיר זיכרון הכולל למעלה מ-22 אלף שמות של ילדים שנהרגו מאז השבעה באוקטובר - ישראלים ופלסטינים יחד. על פי הנתונים שעליהם מבוסס המיצב, מדובר בכ-62 ילדים ישראלים לצד יותר מ-22 אלף ילדים פלסטינים (מרביתם מרצועת עזה) שנהרגו מאז ה-7 באוקטובר. משתתפי הוועידה יוזמנו לעצור מול כל שם ולהדליק נר.

השמות מוצגים בערבוב מוחלט, עם שם פרטי וגיל בלבד, ללא כל שיוך לאומי או הבחנה אחרת. מצד אחד, צפויה ביקורת על עצם ההצבה המשותפת של שמות ילדים ישראלים ופלסטינים, בטענה שיש בכך פגיעה בשכול הישראלי. מצד שני, צפויה ביקורת הפוכה - עצם ערבוב השמות, יוצר תחושת סימטריה, בשעה שהפערים בהיקף האובדן ובהקשרו הם עדות לחוסר איזון בין הצד הישראלי לצד הפלסטיני. המיצב מבטא בדיוק את הדילמה הזו.

הפרויקט, בליוויו האמנותי של עידו ברונו, מבקש לבחון כיצד ניתן להציג מוות ואובדן בקנה מידה קולוסאלי שכזה, מבלי להיעלם בתוך מספרים - אך גם מבלי להשטיח את הפערים הבלתי נתפסים שבמציאות. לדבריהם, הפתרון שנבחר אינו מבקש לפתור או למתן את המתח, אלא מבקש להנכיח אותו, ולהביאו לדיון: שמות פרטיים וגיל בלבד, ללא הקשר, בערבוב מוחלט - בחירה ברורה שמתנגדת ליצירת היררכיה בין ילדים מתים, ומבקשת להעביר את נקודת המבט, ואת הדיון המתבקש אל הצופה.

המיצב, שהוא חלק מקמפיין "לחמלה אין גבול" בשיתוף עם סטודיו לאבה, יוצג במסגרת ועידת השלום העממית 2026, אירוע השלום הגדול בישראל השנה והכינוס המרכזי הראשון של מחנה השלום מאז סיום הלחימה מול איראן ולבנון וחצי שנה לאחר הפסקת האש בעזה. הוועידה, ביוזמת קואליציית "הגיע הזמן", הכוללת מעל 80 ארגונים יהודים וערבים בתחומי הפיוס, שלום וחברה משותפת, צפויה לארח אלפי משתתפים מהארץ ומהעולם - פוליטיקאים, דיפלומטים, אנשי ציבור, אמנים ופעילי שלום.

במסגרת הוועידה יתקיים גם פאנל מיוחד בהשתתפות יוצריו, שבו תידון הדילמה העולה מן המיצב השנוי במחלוקת. תחת הכותרת "זה הכרחי. זה אפשרי. זה יקרה. שלום.", תעמיד הוועידה במרכז השיח הציבורי את שאלת היציאה ממדיניות "מלחמת הנצח", ותציג שורה של תוכניות עבודה, פאנלים מדיניים ומיזמים אזרחיים - לצד מיצבי אמנות, בהם עבודות של Broken Fingaz, אדם יקותיאלי, עליא חליל ומחמוד קייס.
