In the Age of Left or Right Extremism — A Call to Hear the Voice of the Silent Majority

There are moments in history when ordinary people begin to feel like strangers in their own countries.

Not because foreign armies crossed their borders.

Not because one political party defeated another in an election.

But because the institutions that once claimed to represent them no longer even pretend to hear them.

Across the Western world today, millions of ordinary citizens wake up every morning with the same quiet feeling: that nobody truly speaks for them anymore.

In parts of Europe, governments and political systems drift further and further toward ideological extremism detached from the daily reality of common people struggling with rising costs of living, insecurity, immigration crises, collapsing public trust, and the erosion of social cohesion.

In other countries, including modern Russia, power has hardened in the opposite direction — toward authoritarian nationalism and political repression where dissent itself becomes dangerous.

And in the United States, perhaps the most influential democracy in the modern world, society appears increasingly split into two hostile camps locked in permanent political warfare. Republicans and Democrats no longer merely disagree; many now see one another as enemies. Truth itself has become fragmented. Every newspaper, every television channel, every social media platform presents a different “reality.” Citizens no longer know whom to trust, what information is real, or whether any institution still serves the public honestly.

Meanwhile, the average human being — the worker, the pensioner, the student, the struggling family, the lonely individual trying to survive day by day — is left without a voice.

The modern media landscape has only deepened this crisis.

Large newspapers, television corporations, online platforms, and social media giants increasingly resemble tools of political influence, economic interests, ideological movements, or elite power struggles. The common citizen often feels invisible unless they can be used as a statistic, a slogan, or a political weapon.

The result is a growing collapse of trust.

Trust in governments.

Trust in journalism.

Trust in democratic institutions.

Trust in one another.

And when trust collapses, societies begin to fracture.

We now witness the consequences everywhere around us:

An immigration crisis shaking Europe and fueling fear, anger, and instability.

Economic hardship and uncertainty spreading across nations once considered stable and prosperous.

Civil unrest and political violence becoming normalized.

Rising racism, antisemitism, hatred, and extremism from multiple directions at once.

An increase in crime and insecurity that leaves ordinary citizens afraid in their own streets and neighborhoods.

Wars spreading across regions already exhausted by conflict.

Human rights and democratic values weakening under pressure from fear, propaganda, polarization, and political opportunism.

The tragedy is that the majority of people are neither extremists of the left nor extremists of the right.

Most human beings simply wish to live normal lives.

To work.

To raise families.

To speak freely without fear.

To preserve dignity and stability.

To believe that tomorrow can still be better than today.

But the silent majority is increasingly drowned out by political machines, ideological activists, online mobs, and media systems that reward outrage more than truth.

This newspaper was founded on a simple belief:

That the voice of ordinary people still matters.

“Kol HaAm” — “Voice of the People” — does not belong to political elites, corporations, governments, or ideological movements. It belongs to human beings themselves: the forgotten, the ignored, the frustrated, the hopeful, the struggling, and the thoughtful.

We believe the world does not only need professional commentators and career politicians.

It also needs the voices of teachers, factory workers, immigrants, veterans, nurses, programmers, students, poets, unemployed people, pensioners, lonely individuals, and ordinary citizens whose experiences reflect realities that statistics and slogans cannot capture.

A healthy society cannot survive when only the powerful are heard.

And so today we issue a call.

To writers.

To thinkers.

To ordinary citizens everywhere.

Send us your articles.

Your opinion columns.

Your essays.

Your prose.

Your poetry.

Tell us about your life.

Your fears.

Your hopes.

Your city.

Your country.

Your struggles and observations about the world around you.

Not because every opinion is automatically correct.

But because no democracy can survive when ordinary people disappear from public conversation.

“Kol HaAm” seeks to become a newspaper where the common human being — whoever they are, wherever they come from, whatever their background or beliefs may be — can still be seen and heard.

History teaches us a dangerous lesson:

When moderate voices vanish, extremism fills the vacuum.

And when human beings stop listening to one another, societies slowly lose their humanity.

The world does not need more screaming.

It needs more listening.

Perhaps that is where healing must begin.

בעידן של קיצוניות מימין ומשמאל — קריאה לשמוע את קולו של הרוב הדומם

יש רגעים בהיסטוריה שבהם אנשים רגילים מתחילים להרגיש זרים בארצות שלהם עצמם.

לא משום שצבאות זרים חצו את הגבולות.

לא משום שמפלגה פוליטית אחת ניצחה אחרת בבחירות.

אלא משום שהמוסדות שפעם טענו כי הם מייצגים אותם כבר אינם אפילו מעמידים פנים שהם מקשיבים להם.

ברחבי העולם המערבי כיום, מיליוני אזרחים פשוטים מתעוררים בכל בוקר עם אותה תחושה שקטה: שאיש כבר איננו באמת מדבר בשמם.

בחלק ממדינות אירופה, ממשלות ומערכות פוליטיות נסחפות יותר ויותר לעבר קיצוניות אידיאולוגית המנותקת מחיי היום־יום של האנשים הפשוטים המתמודדים עם יוקר מחיה, חוסר ביטחון, משברי הגירה, קריסת אמון ציבורי והתפוררות הלכידות החברתית.

במדינות אחרות, ובהן רוסיה המודרנית, השלטון התקשה בכיוון ההפוך — אל עבר לאומנות סמכותנית ודיכוי פוליטי, מקום שבו עצם הביקורת על השלטון עלולה להפוך למסוכנת.

ובארצות הברית, אולי הדמוקרטיה המשפיעה ביותר בעולם המודרני, נדמה שהחברה נקרעת יותר ויותר לשני מחנות עוינים הנמצאים במלחמה פוליטית תמידית. רפובליקנים ודמוקרטים כבר אינם רק חלוקים בדעותיהם; רבים מהם רואים זה בזה אויבים. האמת עצמה הפכה למפוצלת. כל עיתון, כל ערוץ טלוויזיה וכל פלטפורמת מדיה חברתית מציגים "מציאות" אחרת. אזרחים רבים כבר אינם יודעים במי לבטוח, איזה מידע אמיתי, והאם בכלל נותר מוסד כלשהו שפועל ביושר למען הציבור.

ובתוך כל זה, האדם הממוצע — העובד, הפנסיונר, הסטודנט, המשפחה המתקשה להתקיים, האדם הבודד שמנסה לשרוד את היום־יום — נותר ללא קול.

נוף התקשורת המודרני רק החריף את המשבר הזה.

עיתונים גדולים, תאגידי טלוויזיה, פלטפורמות אינטרנט ורשתות חברתיות דומים יותר ויותר לכלי השפעה פוליטיים, אינטרסים כלכליים, תנועות אידיאולוגיות או מאבקי כוח של אליטות. האזרח הפשוט מרגיש לעיתים קרובות בלתי נראה — אלא אם כן ניתן להשתמש בו כסטטיסטיקה, כסיסמה או כנשק פוליטי.

התוצאה היא קריסה הולכת וגוברת של אמון.

אמון בממשלות.

אמון בעיתונות.

אמון במוסדות הדמוקרטיים.

אמון זה בזה.

וכאשר האמון קורס, חברות מתחילות להתפורר.

כבר עכשיו אנו רואים את התוצאות סביבנו:

משבר הגירה המטלטל את אירופה ומזין פחד, כעס וחוסר יציבות.

קשיים כלכליים וחוסר ודאות המתפשטים גם במדינות שפעם נחשבו יציבות ומשגשגות.

אי־שקט אזרחי ואלימות פוליטית ההופכים בהדרגה לדבר שבשגרה.

עלייה בגזענות, אנטישמיות, שנאה וקיצוניות מכיוונים שונים בו־זמנית.

עלייה בפשיעה ובתחושת חוסר הביטחון, הגורמות לאנשים לחשוש ברחובות ובשכונות שלהם עצמם.

מלחמות המתפשטות באזורים שכבר מותשים מסכסוכים.

זכויות אדם וערכים דמוקרטיים הנחלשים תחת לחץ של פחד, תעמולה, קיטוב פוליטי וציניות של בעלי כוח.

והטרגדיה היא שרוב האנשים אינם קיצונים לא משמאל ולא מימין.

רוב בני האדם פשוט רוצים לחיות חיים נורמליים.

לעבוד.

לגדל משפחות.

לדבר בחופשיות בלי פחד.

לשמור על כבוד ויציבות.

להאמין שמחר עדיין יכול להיות טוב יותר מהיום.

אבל קולו של הרוב הדומם הולך ונבלע בתוך מכונות פוליטיות, פעילים אידיאולוגיים, המוני רשת זועמים ומערכות תקשורת המתגמלות זעם יותר מאשר אמת.

העיתון הזה נוסד מתוך אמונה פשוטה:

שלקולם של האנשים הרגילים עדיין יש משמעות.

"קול העם" אינו שייך לאליטות פוליטיות, לתאגידים, לממשלות או לתנועות אידיאולוגיות. הוא שייך לבני האדם עצמם: לנשכחים, למודרים, למתוסכלים, למקווים, למתמודדים ולחושבים.

אנו מאמינים שהעולם אינו זקוק רק לפרשנים מקצועיים ולפוליטיקאים מקצועיים.

הוא זקוק גם לקולות של מורים, פועלים, מהגרים, חיילים משוחררים, אחיות, מתכנתים, סטודנטים, משוררים, מובטלים, פנסיונרים, אנשים בודדים ואזרחים פשוטים — אנשים שחוויות החיים שלהם משקפות מציאות שסטטיסטיקות וסיסמאות אינן מסוגלות לתאר.

חברה בריאה אינה יכולה לשרוד כאשר רק בעלי הכוח נשמעים.

ולכן היום אנו יוצאים בקריאה.

לכותבים.

לחושבים.

לאזרחים פשוטים בכל מקום.

שלחו לנו את המאמרים שלכם.

את טורי הדעה שלכם.

את המסות שלכם.

את הסיפורים שלכם.

את השירה שלכם.

ספרו לנו על חייכם.

על הפחדים שלכם.

על התקוות שלכם.

על העיר שלכם.

על המדינה שלכם.

על המאבקים והתובנות שלכם לגבי העולם שסביבכם.

לא משום שכל דעה היא בהכרח נכונה.

אלא משום ששום דמוקרטיה אינה יכולה לשרוד כאשר האנשים הפשוטים נעלמים מן השיח הציבורי.

"קול העם" מבקש להיות עיתון שבו האדם הפשוט — יהיה אשר יהיה, מכל מקום שממנו בא, ובעל כל רקע או אמונה — עדיין יכול להיראות ולהישמע.

ההיסטוריה מלמדת אותנו שיעור מסוכן:

כאשר קולות מתונים נעלמים, הקיצוניות ממלאת את הוואקום.

וכאשר בני אדם מפסיקים להקשיב זה לזה, חברות מאבדות בהדרגה את אנושיותן.

העולם אינו זקוק לעוד צעקות.

הוא זקוק ליותר הקשבה.

ואולי שם, ורק שם, יכול להתחיל הריפוי.
