THE HUMAN UNDERGROUND
A Manifesto by The Dissident
We were promised that technology would serve humanity.
Instead, humanity is being reorganized to serve technology.
We were promised liberation from exhausting labor, access to all human knowledge, greater democracy, and a world connected beyond borders. Yet the machines that were supposed to free us have become instruments of surveillance, manipulation, dependency, and control. The networks that were supposed to unite us increasingly divide us into isolated consumers, measurable profiles, predictable behaviors, and profitable fragments of data.
The future is arriving, but it does not appear to belong to ordinary human beings.
It belongs to corporations with data centers larger than towns. It belongs to governments that demand greater powers of identification, monitoring, classification, and prediction. It belongs to financial systems that measure every person according to productivity, purchasing power, credit, obedience, and usefulness.
We are told that this is progress.
We are told that nothing can stop it.
We are told to adapt.
But adaptation to inhumanity is not progress. Submission to machinery is not evolution. A society that becomes more efficient while becoming less compassionate is not advancing. It is merely perfecting its own moral collapse.
The Coming Dystopia
The language surrounding the so-called “Great Reset of 2030” speaks of transformation, sustainability, automation, digital identity, artificial intelligence, and a new global economy. Some see these developments as necessary reforms. Others see them as centralized attempts to reshape society from above. Whatever interpretation one accepts, one truth is already visible: enormous technological and economic changes are being planned and implemented with very little meaningful participation from the people whose lives will be transformed.
The danger is not contained within a single slogan, organization, country, or political party. The danger is the construction of a world in which human beings are treated as components in a system they neither understand nor control.
Governments and Big Tech corporations are rushing to build immense data centers. Every movement, purchase, message, search, medical record, political opinion, friendship, and private desire can be recorded. Artificial intelligence systems are being trained to recognize faces, voices, habits, emotions, preferences, and possible future actions.
Surveillance no longer requires a secret police officer standing outside your door. It can be built into your telephone, your car, your workplace, your street, your bank account, your entertainment, and eventually your own home.
Control will not always arrive wearing a uniform. It may arrive as convenience.
It may ask you to accept new terms and conditions.
It may promise security.
It may offer a personalized experience.
It may recommend what you should watch, whom you should trust, where you should go, what you should buy, and what you should believe.
The perfect prison will not look like a prison. It will look like a platform that nobody can afford to leave.
When Human Labor Becomes Unnecessary
Artificial intelligence and robotics may soon perform work once believed to require uniquely human intelligence. Machines will manufacture goods, operate warehouses, write reports, produce images, answer customers, translate languages, drive vehicles, diagnose problems, supervise workers, and perhaps even make political and military decisions.
The tragedy is not that machines can reduce unnecessary labor. Freedom from dangerous and exhausting work could be a blessing.
The tragedy is that under capitalism, the benefits of automation belong primarily to those who own the machines.
Workers are not liberated. They are dismissed.
Communities are not enriched. They are abandoned.
Productivity rises while wages stagnate. Wealth accumulates in fewer hands. People who are no longer profitable are described as obsolete, unskilled, burdensome, or economically inactive.
A humane society would use automation to give every person more time, security, education, creativity, and rest. An inhuman society will use automation to concentrate wealth while declaring millions of people unnecessary.
This is the nightmare before us: a world in which machines perform the labor, algorithms manage the population, corporations own the infrastructure, and ordinary people survive only by accepting whatever conditions are imposed upon them.
In such a world, the unemployed person is not treated as a citizen liberated from labor. He is treated as a defective economic unit.
The elderly are regarded as expenses.
The sick are regarded as inefficiencies.
Artists are regarded as content providers.
Friendship becomes engagement.
Identity becomes a database entry.
Love becomes a pattern that can be predicted and monetized.
Human life becomes worthless because it cannot compete with the speed, obedience, and efficiency of the machine.
We Reject This Future
We reject the belief that technological development is automatically good.
We reject the belief that markets should determine the value of human life.
We reject the idea that privacy is suspicious.
We reject the idea that every human action must be recorded, analyzed, optimized, and sold.
We reject the conversion of citizens into users, workers into disposable resources, communities into markets, and human beings into data.
We reject both the authoritarian state and the authoritarian corporation.
We reject the false choice between government surveillance and corporate surveillance.
We reject politics that demands loyalty to left or right while both sides surrender human life to the same machinery of profit, control, bureaucracy, and permanent observation.
This manifesto belongs neither to the left nor the right.
It belongs to everyone who still believes that a person is more than an economic function.
It belongs to workers, artists, programmers, farmers, teachers, caregivers, religious believers, atheists, conservatives, socialists, liberals, anarchists, and those who no longer trust any political label.
It belongs to anyone who feels that something essential is disappearing from the world.
A More Human Era
We call for a more human era: less technological, less capitalistic, less centralized, and less obsessed with speed.
We do not demand the destruction of every machine. We demand that machines remain our tools rather than becoming our masters.
Technology should be judged by whether it strengthens human freedom, not merely by whether it increases efficiency. An invention that saves time but destroys privacy may not be progress. A platform that connects millions while making them lonelier may not be progress. An algorithm that predicts behavior while eliminating personal autonomy may not be progress.
We need a moral and human compass.
Not everything that can be built should be built.
Not everything that can be automated should be automated.
Not everything that can be measured should be measured.
Not everything that can be collected should be stored.
Not every problem requires a digital solution.
We call for limits.
We call for the right to live without constant surveillance.
We call for the right to use cash, to read anonymously, to communicate privately, to repair our own possessions, to own physical books, to meet without registration, and to exist without producing data for corporations or governments.
We call for a right to meaningful human work, while also recognizing that a person’s right to food, shelter, dignity, and participation must never depend entirely upon whether a corporation finds that person profitable.
We call for slower cities, stronger neighborhoods, public libraries, local workshops, independent art, community gardens, open knowledge, small businesses, cooperative institutions, and places where people may gather without being required to buy something.
We call for schools that teach judgment rather than obedience, history rather than propaganda, creativity rather than standardized output, and citizenship rather than consumerism.
We call for medicine that sees the patient rather than the data profile.
We call for art made not merely to attract attention but to express the human soul.
We call for a society in which weakness is not punished, old age is not discarded, disability is not treated as failure, and loneliness is not exploited by machines pretending to be friends.
The Human Underground
Should the public world become fully monitored, commercialized, and automated, human freedom will seek refuge elsewhere.
It will survive in underground networks.
These networks need not be violent, secret armies. They must be communities of memory, culture, mutual aid, privacy, and nonviolent resistance.
The underground may be a group of neighbors sharing food and helping one another outside commercial platforms.
It may be a small library of printed books preserved when digital texts are censored or altered.
It may be a community radio station, a local newsletter, an independent website, a private correspondence circle, or a group of programmers maintaining free and open-source tools.
It may be artists creating work that refuses algorithmic fashion.
It may be teachers preserving forbidden questions.
It may be workers forming cooperatives.
It may be people meeting face to face, without cameras, advertisements, rankings, or recommendation systems.
It may be an old computer running independent software.
It may be a garden.
It may be a poem copied by hand.
It may be a room where people are permitted to speak honestly.
The human underground will protect what the automated world cannot understand: friendship without profit, knowledge without ownership, kindness without measurement, faith without branding, creativity without analytics, and dignity without economic justification.
It will preserve the human spirit not through conquest, but through refusal.
The refusal to surrender every private thought.
The refusal to abandon those considered useless.
The refusal to allow algorithms to determine truth.
The refusal to let corporations own human culture.
The refusal to let fear turn neighbors into informants.
The refusal to forget how people lived before every moment became a source of data.
What Must Be Preserved
Preserve books.
Preserve independent computers and open systems.
Preserve practical skills that do not depend entirely upon remote corporate servers.
Preserve local history.
Preserve private conversation.
Preserve the ability to repair, build, grow, cook, teach, write, and care for one another.
Preserve languages, traditions, songs, stories, and memories that cannot be reduced to commercial content.
Preserve the distinction between a human being and a machine imitating one.
Preserve childhood from permanent surveillance.
Preserve the right to make mistakes without those mistakes becoming permanent entries in an invisible profile.
Preserve the right to disappear from the network.
Preserve the right to be ordinary.
Most of all, preserve the knowledge that a human being possesses value even when he produces nothing, buys nothing, and serves no institutional purpose.
A Call Beyond Politics
To those on the left: remember that centralized technological power does not become humane merely because it speaks in the language of inclusion, safety, or progress.
To those on the right: remember that corporate power does not become freedom merely because it calls itself private enterprise.
To the religious: defend the sacred worth of the person against systems that reduce the soul to data.
To the secular: defend human rights, reason, privacy, and democratic accountability against technological absolutism.
To programmers and engineers: you are not merely building tools. You are building the conditions under which future people will live. Refuse to say that ethics are someone else’s responsibility.
To artists and writers: do not allow human culture to become an endless stream of synthetic material designed only to occupy attention.
To workers: do not turn your anger against other workers while those who own the machines accumulate unprecedented power.
To young people: you are not required to live every part of your life publicly. Your identity belongs to you. Your thoughts are not raw material. Your attention is not a natural resource waiting to be extracted.
To those who feel powerless: remember that every system depends upon cooperation, belief, habit, and participation. Even the largest machine cannot manufacture genuine human meaning.
Join the Underground
Join the underground—not an underground of hatred or violence, but an underground of humanity.
Create circles of trust.
Support independent creators.
Use decentralized and open technologies where practical.
Protect privacy.
Learn forgotten skills.
Share knowledge.
Help those whom the economy considers useless.
Build institutions small enough to remain accountable and human.
Meet people in physical places.
Listen without recording.
Speak without performing.
Create without asking an algorithm for permission.
Refuse political fanaticism. Refuse racial hatred. Refuse antisemitism. Refuse dehumanization. Refuse the convenient lie that one group must lose its humanity so another group may be free.
The underground must not reproduce the cruelty of the system it opposes.
Its purpose is not to dominate.
Its purpose is to preserve.
The Final Warning
A civilization can survive poverty, disaster, and war. It cannot survive indefinitely after it loses the belief that human life has intrinsic worth.
The greatest danger is not that machines will become human.
The greatest danger is that humans will be trained to behave like machines: efficient, obedient, measurable, replaceable, and empty.
The future is not predetermined. Technology has no destiny of its own. Every system is built through human choices, protected by human institutions, and accepted through human habits.
There is still time to choose another direction.
There is still time to demand limits.
There is still time to rebuild community.
There is still time to defend privacy, freedom, dignity, and the right to remain fully human.
But the hour is late.
The machinery is expanding.
The data centers are rising.
The systems are learning.
The powerful are preparing for a world in which they may no longer need the majority of humanity.
Therefore, we must prepare as well—not for violence, chaos, or destruction, but for preservation, solidarity, independence, and nonviolent resistance.
Let the human underground begin wherever two people meet and agree that human life is not disposable.
Let it begin in homes, workshops, libraries, gardens, studios, schools, local networks, and private conversations.
Let it cross every political border.
Let it welcome every person who refuses to become a number.
Let it keep alive the memory of freedom.
Let it defend the unmeasurable.
Let it protect the fragile.
Let it preserve the human spirit until the world is ready to become human again.
We are not data.
We are not products.
We are not obsolete.
We are human beings.
And we will not disappear.
