## The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Dark Web and Beyond — Part II ### Guidelines, Safety, and Proper Conduct on Anonymous Networks ### By Anonymous Entering an anonymous network is not the same as opening an ordinary website. It is closer to entering an unfamiliar city after dark: most streets are ordinary, some are fascinating, some are abandoned, and a few are places where no sensible traveler should remain. Networks such as Tor, I2P, Gemini, IRC, Matrix, Yggdrasil, Freenet, and various peer-to-peer systems were created for different purposes. Some emphasize anonymity, some decentralization, some simplicity, and others resistance to censorship. None of them automatically make a person safe, invisible, trustworthy, or morally exempt from responsibility. Anonymity can protect journalists, political dissidents, whistleblowers, abuse survivors, researchers, artists, and ordinary people who simply want privacy. It can also attract scammers, manipulators, extremists, malicious hackers, and people seeking victims. The technology itself is neither good nor evil. What matters is how it is used, what precautions are taken, and how people behave toward one another. This second part of the guide is therefore not a directory of destinations. It is a code for traveling carefully, legally, ethically, and with realistic expectations. ### 1. Understand What Anonymity Really Means The first rule is simple: Anonymity is never absolute. Using Tor does not automatically make you anonymous. Joining an encrypted Matrix room does not guarantee that everyone inside is trustworthy. Using an unusual protocol does not prevent you from revealing yourself through your behavior. A person may hide an IP address and still reveal their identity through: * A familiar username * A reused email address * Personal stories * Writing style * Time-zone patterns * Photographs and document metadata * Details about work, family, location, health, or daily routines * Links to accounts used elsewhere * Files containing identifying information Privacy is not a single button. It is a combination of technology, habits, judgment, and restraint. A person should decide what they are protecting and from whom. Someone avoiding ordinary advertising trackers has different needs from a journalist protecting a confidential source. Someone casually exploring Gemini does not face the same risks as a political activist operating under an authoritarian government. This process is sometimes called threat modeling. The term sounds technical, but the basic questions are straightforward: What information must remain private? Who might try to obtain it? What would happen if they succeeded? Which precautions are reasonable for the situation? Without clear answers, people often either take too few precautions or become so frightened that they can no longer think rationally. ### 2. Separate Identities Carefully One of the most common mistakes on anonymous networks is mixing an anonymous identity with an ordinary public identity. A person may create a new nickname and then immediately use the same writing style, profile image, email address, personal story, or favorite quotation that appears on their public accounts. The technical protection may work perfectly while the human user defeats it. A separate identity should remain genuinely separate. Do not casually reuse: * Usernames * Passwords * Avatars * Email addresses * Biographical descriptions * Personal photographs * Public cryptographic keys * Signature phrases * Links to personal websites * Accounts connected to a real name Do not tell strangers enough small facts that they can assemble them into a complete identity. A single detail may seem harmless, but ten harmless details can form a recognizable portrait. This does not mean that every conversation must be cold or dishonest. It means understanding that disclosure is often permanent. Once information has been posted, copied, archived, quoted, or screenshotted, control over it may be lost. ### 3. Never Trust a Stranger Merely Because They Use Privacy Technology A hidden service, encrypted chat, or anonymous message board may create an atmosphere of secrecy and intimacy. That atmosphere can make strangers appear more trustworthy than they are. Encryption protects communication in transit. It does not make the person on the other side honest. A stranger may claim to be: * A journalist * A security expert * A political dissident * A system administrator * A victim in need * A representative of a famous group * A long-time member of a community * A person sharing the same beliefs and experiences Any of these claims may be true, partly true, exaggerated, or completely fabricated. Be especially cautious when someone quickly asks for personal details, private photographs, money, files, account credentials, remote access, cryptocurrency, or communication outside the original platform. Trust should develop slowly through consistent behavior. Even then, it should remain limited. A person can be friendly without surrendering access to their identity, computer, finances, or private life. ### 4. Use Official Software and Keep It Updated Privacy tools should be obtained from their official projects or trusted operating-system repositories. Modified installers, unofficial browser bundles, “enhanced anonymity packages,” and pirated security tools may contain malware. A program claiming to increase privacy could instead record passwords, steal files, or reveal the user’s real network address. Updates matter because privacy and security software is not magical. Vulnerabilities are discovered, protocols evolve, and old versions may become unsafe. Basic precautions include: * Keep the operating system updated. * Keep browsers and messaging clients updated. * Remove software that is no longer supported. * Verify downloads when the project provides signatures or checksums. * Do not disable security protections merely because an anonymous stranger recommends doing so. * Avoid installing unnecessary browser extensions. * Use reputable anti-malware protection where appropriate. * Back up important data before experimenting with unfamiliar software. Tor Browser, for example, is designed with a particular privacy configuration. Adding extensions, changing advanced settings, or combining it with unusual proxy tools can make a user more distinctive rather than more anonymous. In privacy systems, being unusual can itself become identifying. ### 5. Do Not Open Unknown Files Casually Files are among the greatest risks on anonymous networks. A document, archive, image, executable, script, or media file may contain malware or exploit a software vulnerability. Even an ordinary office document can connect to the internet, reveal metadata, load external content, or expose information about the device used to open it. Treat unexpected files as potentially hostile. Be cautious with: * Executable files * Scripts * Password-protected archives * Office documents containing macros * Disk images * Browser extensions * Pirated software * “Security utilities” shared by strangers * Files that demand administrative privileges * Documents that must be opened outside a privacy environment Do not let curiosity override judgment. A mysterious file is not a puzzle that must be solved. People with advanced security needs may use isolated environments or dedicated devices, but isolation is not a substitute for knowledge. A poorly configured virtual machine can still expose information, and malware may escape or exploit shared folders and clipboard access. The safest unknown file is often the one that is never opened. ### 6. Protect Accounts with Unique Passwords Anonymous identities should not reuse passwords from ordinary accounts. A breach on a small forum may expose credentials that attackers then test against email providers, social networks, cloud storage, financial services, and other communities. Use a password manager and create a long, unique password for each account. Enable multi-factor authentication when the service supports it and when doing so does not unnecessarily connect the anonymous identity to a personal phone number or public account. Recovery information must also be considered. An anonymous account connected to a personal email address is not truly separate. Remember that account security and anonymity are related but different. A person can be anonymous but poorly protected, or well protected but easily identifiable. ### 7. Be Careful with Photographs, Audio, and Documents Images may reveal far more than the subject intended. A photograph can contain: * GPS coordinates * Device information * Reflections * Street signs * Window views * Distinctive furniture * Documents in the background * Faces of other people * Weather and lighting clues * Unique landmarks Audio recordings may reveal voices, accents, background conversations, public announcements, local animals, traffic patterns, or room acoustics. Documents may contain author names, revision histories, usernames, printer information, hidden comments, or software metadata. Removing visible information is not always enough. Cropping a photograph does not necessarily remove all metadata, and converting a document may preserve more information than expected. Before sharing media, ask whether sharing it is necessary at all. Redaction is useful, but restraint is safer. ### 8. Do Not Confuse Encryption with Legality Anonymous networks exist inside the real world. Laws still apply. Using privacy software is legal in many places, but particular activities may be illegal regardless of the network used. Laws also vary between jurisdictions and may change over time. Do not assume that hidden services are beyond investigation or accountability. Criminal marketplaces, abusive communities, fraud operations, and malicious infrastructure have repeatedly been infiltrated or shut down. Administrators make mistakes. Servers are seized. Participants cooperate with investigators. Cryptocurrency transactions may be analyzed. Messages may be logged or screenshotted. Anyone who encounters material involving exploitation, credible threats, trafficking, abuse, or immediate danger should not participate, redistribute it, or attempt amateur investigation. Leave the location, preserve personal safety, and consider contacting an appropriate trusted authority or specialist organization. Curiosity is not a justification for entering or remaining in criminal spaces. ### 9. Learn the Community Before Speaking Every network has its own culture. IRC channels may have long-established customs. Gemini capsules may value quiet, thoughtful publishing. Technical mailing lists may expect users to read documentation before asking questions. Matrix rooms may have written rules and active moderation. Small peer-to-peer communities may depend heavily on reputation. Before participating: * Read the rules. * Observe the conversation. * Review pinned messages or introductory documents. * Learn whether the space is public, private, logged, or archived. * Avoid flooding the channel. * Do not repeatedly ask questions already answered in the documentation. * Respect topic boundaries. * Use content warnings where the community expects them. * Follow moderator instructions. Entering a small online community is like entering a room where a conversation is already taking place. Anonymity does not excuse rudeness. ### 10. Do Not Demand Personal Information Respecting privacy is not only about protecting yourself. It also means protecting others. Do not pressure people to reveal: * Their real name * Their face * Their location * Their employer * Their legal status * Their medical history * Their political organization * Their family information * Their public accounts * Their reasons for requiring anonymity Some people use anonymous networks because disclosure could cost them employment, housing, freedom, family relationships, or physical safety. A person who refuses to identify themselves is not automatically suspicious. Privacy may be the very reason they are present. Likewise, never attempt to expose or “dox” another user. Publishing private identifying information can cause severe harm and may be illegal. ### 11. Ask Permission Before Reposting Conversations A conversation held in a private or semi-private environment should not automatically be treated as public material. Do not repost logs, screenshots, personal messages, or quotations without permission unless there is a compelling safety or accountability reason. Even then, remove unnecessary identifying details and consider whether public exposure will create more harm. On anonymous networks, people may speak openly because they believe the context is limited. Betraying that expectation damages not only one individual but the trust of the entire community. At the same time, users should remember that no digital conversation is guaranteed to remain private. Anyone can save a message. The ethical rule is not a technical guarantee; it is a standard of conduct. ### 12. Avoid Drama, Provocation, and Reputation Games Anonymous spaces can make conflict escalate rapidly. People may behave more aggressively because they do not see the immediate human consequences of their words. Common destructive behaviors include: * Trolling * Harassment * Deliberate humiliation * Impersonation * Coordinated attacks * Publishing private messages * Spreading unverified accusations * Manipulating moderators * Creating multiple identities to simulate support * Provoking vulnerable users for entertainment Do not assume that cruelty becomes harmless when performed through a nickname. When conflict begins, disengagement is often wiser than victory. Block, mute, leave, or report where appropriate. Arguing for hours with an anonymous provocateur rarely produces truth or justice. A community that rewards constant outrage will eventually consume its own members. ### 13. Do Not Become a Courier for Strangers Never allow an unknown person to use your account, computer, server, address, payment method, storage space, or network connection without understanding exactly what is happening. Requests may be framed as harmless favors: “Can you host this file?” “Can you forward this message?” “Can you test this login?” “Can you receive this payment?” “Can you run this program?” “Can you create an account for me?” “Can I route traffic through your server?” Such favors can make an innocent person part of fraud, abuse, malware distribution, money laundering, harassment, or unauthorized access. Good intentions do not remove consequences. ### 14. Be Skeptical of Money and Cryptocurrency Requests Anonymous networks contain many financial scams. Common approaches include: * Fake investment opportunities * Counterfeit escrow services * False donation campaigns * Impersonation of trusted community members * Advance-fee fraud * Blackmail * Fake technical support * Recovery scams * “Guaranteed” cryptocurrency profits * Requests for urgent assistance Cryptocurrency payments are often difficult or impossible to reverse. The use of cryptocurrency does not prove that a transaction is legitimate, private, or untraceable. Do not send money because a stranger creates urgency, fear, guilt, or excitement. Verify claims independently. A legitimate person should tolerate reasonable caution. ### 15. Recognize Social Engineering Many attacks target the person rather than the computer. Social engineering is the manipulation of someone into revealing information or performing an unsafe action. The attacker may use friendship, authority, fear, romance, ideology, urgency, or sympathy. Warning signs include: * A relationship becoming intensely personal almost immediately * Pressure to keep secrets * Claims that only the attacker can be trusted * Repeated emergencies requiring money * Requests to disable security features * Instructions to move to a less secure platform * Threats of exposure * Claims that hesitation proves disloyalty * Requests to test software or visit unusual links * Attempts to isolate someone from moderators or friends The strongest defense is the ability to pause. Do not make important decisions while frightened, angry, lonely, flattered, or rushed. ### 16. Maintain Psychological Boundaries Anonymous networks can expose users to disturbing ideas, extreme communities, paranoia, cruelty, and graphic material. Even legal content may have a psychological effect. A person should not treat emotional resilience as an unlimited resource. Leave a space when it repeatedly makes you feel frightened, obsessed, degraded, manipulated, or unable to function. Take breaks. Speak with trusted people outside the network. Do not let a hidden community become the only source of information, identity, friendship, or meaning in your life. Anonymity can create powerful connections, but it can also create false intimacy. People may disclose trauma, desperation, or rage to strangers who are not able or willing to respond responsibly. No online community should demand total loyalty or insist that the outside world is entirely false, evil, or unreachable. Those are warning signs of manipulation. ### 17. Verify Information Before Believing or Sharing It Anonymous sources can reveal important truths. They can also spread fabricated documents, propaganda, rumors, and deliberate disinformation. A claim does not become credible merely because it is secret. Before repeating information: * Look for independent confirmation. * Examine the original source. * Distinguish evidence from interpretation. * Check dates and context. * Consider who benefits from the claim. * Watch for edited images and fabricated screenshots. * Do not treat confidence as proof. * Correct mistakes openly. Extraordinary claims require stronger evidence, not stronger emotions. Anonymous networks may resist censorship, but resistance to censorship does not guarantee accuracy. ### 18. Respect Technical Resources Many alternative networks are maintained by volunteers. Servers, relays, bridges, nodes, capsules, and community services cost money and labor. Do not abuse them through: * Spam * Automated scraping * Denial-of-service attacks * Excessive bandwidth use * Cryptocurrency mining * Malware distribution * Unauthorized scanning * Repeated ban evasion * Hosting illegal material * Deliberately exhausting storage or moderation resources Decentralized does not mean limitless. Volunteer infrastructure survives only when users exercise restraint. Contribute when possible. Report technical problems responsibly. Thank maintainers. Share documentation. Help newcomers without encouraging dependency. ### 19. Protect Operators and Volunteers People who run privacy services may face legal complaints, financial costs, harassment, or technical attacks because of the behavior of their users. Do not assume that an operator knows or approves of every action occurring through their infrastructure. A Tor relay operator, Matrix administrator, IRC network volunteer, or Gemini host may simply be providing a neutral technical service. Follow abuse policies. Do not publish operator information unnecessarily. Do not involve volunteers in personal disputes. Report serious problems through the appropriate channel rather than launching public accusations without evidence. Communities collapse when every disagreement becomes a campaign of destruction. ### 20. Understand the Difference Between Privacy, Anonymity, and Security These terms are related but not interchangeable. Privacy means controlling access to personal information. Anonymity means that an action cannot easily be connected to a known identity. Pseudonymity means using a persistent identity that is not necessarily connected to a legal name. Confidentiality means preventing unauthorized people from reading information. Security means protecting systems, accounts, and data from harm or unauthorized access. A pseudonymous forum account may develop a strong reputation without revealing the user’s legal identity. An encrypted conversation may be confidential but not anonymous. A public Gemini capsule may provide privacy from advertising trackers while intentionally publishing the author’s name. Using the correct terms prevents false expectations. ### 21. Know When to Leave The most important safety tool is not a browser, an operating system, or an encryption protocol. It is the decision to leave. Leave when a community pressures you to commit illegal acts. Leave when someone threatens or blackmails you. Leave when files or links appear suspicious. Leave when hatred becomes the central purpose of the group. Leave when moderators encourage abuse. Leave when a stranger demands loyalty, money, access, or secrecy. Leave when curiosity has carried you beyond your knowledge or comfort. Leave when participation is damaging your mental health. There is no shame in closing a connection. A traveler does not prove courage by remaining in a burning building. ### 22. A Basic Code of Conduct A responsible traveler on anonymous networks should follow a simple code: Protect your identity without exploiting the identities of others. Use privacy tools for legitimate purposes. Treat unknown files, links, and claims with caution. Never assume that encryption makes strangers trustworthy. Do not participate in abuse, exploitation, fraud, harassment, or unauthorized access. Respect consent, community rules, and personal boundaries. Do not spread private information. Verify before repeating claims. Contribute more than you consume when possible. Leave dangerous spaces before they become part of your life. ### Conclusion: Travel Light, Travel Carefully The alternative internet is not one place. It is a collection of protocols, communities, experiments, archives, conversations, and unfinished ideas. Some areas preserve the spirit of the early internet: small websites, personal writing, volunteer services, independent communities, and conversations that are not shaped by advertising algorithms. Other areas are unstable, deceptive, exploitative, or dangerous. The wise traveler avoids both romanticism and panic. Anonymous networks are neither a magical kingdom of absolute freedom nor a single criminal underworld. They are human environments built through software, and they contain the same courage, creativity, loneliness, greed, compassion, cruelty, and contradiction found everywhere else. Technology can conceal an address, encrypt a message, or distribute a network. It cannot replace judgment. The best protection is a combination of modest technical knowledge, clear ethical limits, emotional awareness, skepticism, and respect for other human beings. Travel anonymously when anonymity is needed. Speak freely when freedom is threatened. Explore alternatives when the ordinary web feels centralized, commercialized, or controlled. But remember that there is always another person behind the screen—and that anonymity does not remove responsibility. It makes responsibility more important.
