Kol HaAm runs its own IRC on I2P — a place to chat in real time with fellow readers and friends of the newspaper, without revealing who or where you are. Hebrew and English welcome.

Everyone meets in #lobby — one room, all languages, all topics. When a conversation grows big enough to deserve its own channel, one will appear. Communities grow better this way than by opening five empty rooms on day one.
Trust and logging — read this before you chat
We do our best to protect our readers: the server runs only inside I2P, and we do not log message content on the server side. But you have no way to verify that — and on an anonymous network, no promise from an anonymous operator should be trusted, including ours. Given the nature of I2P, everyone should remain vigilant. Work from these assumptions:
- Assume everything you type is being recorded — by us, by another user, or by someone you'll never see.
- Assume any user in the channel may be hostile. A friendly nickname proves nothing.
- IRC is not private chat — and neither are IRC private messages. IRC has no real end-to-end encryption; a /msg is in principle visible to the server operator. A channel is a public square. Choose your words the way you would in one.
- Never share anything that identifies you — not your name, your city, your workplace, or details that narrow you down. On I2P, trust is how anonymity dies.
For genuinely private contact with the editor, use RetroShare or SimpleX (below) — both end-to-end encrypted, both inside I2P.
How to connect
Java I2P router: open the tunnel manager (http://127.0.0.1:7657/i2ptunnelmgr), create a new client tunnel of type IRC, destination irc.kolhaam.i2p, local port e.g. 6770, Auto Start on.
i2pd (C++ router): add this block to ~/.i2pd/tunnels.conf (or /etc/i2pd/tunnels.conf) and restart i2pd:

Then point your IRC client at 127.0.0.1 port 6770, SSL off (I2P already encrypts end-to-end), pick a pseudonym — never your real name — and /join #lobby.

RETROSHARE
You can reach the Kol HaAm editor directly and privately over RetroShare — a serverless, friend-to-friend network with end-to-end encrypted chat, mail and file sharing. Our node runs as an I2P hidden service, so no IP address is exposed on either side. A plain clearnet RetroShare cannot connect to us at all.
- RECOMMENDED — run your own I2P hidden node: when creating your RetroShare profile, choose "Hidden node (Tor/I2P)", create an I2P server tunnel for it in your router, and set the I2P SOCKS proxy in Preferences > Network > Hidden Service Configuration. This way neither side ever sees an IP address — full anonymity for you and for us.
- WARNING — a standard (regular) node can technically reach hidden nodes if you configure an I2P SOCKS proxy, BUT a standard node's certificate contains your real IP address. You would reveal your IP to us the moment we exchange certificates. If you care about your anonymity — and on this network you should — use a hidden node.
How to connect:
- Install RetroShare (retroshare.cc) and create an I2P hidden node profile as described above
- Copy the entire certificate below
- In RetroShare: Home > Add friend > paste the certificate
- Send us your own certificate by email so we can add you back
- Stay online — first connections between hidden nodes over I2P can take several minutes
